In the context of Kabuki's unique makeup, "Kumadori" is generally known.
The truth of the matter is, it is necessary in Kumadori to somehow create the illusion of a mask.
Because the predecessors of Kabuki were all mask dramas.
Gigaku (ancient music), Bugaku (ancient dance), and Noh all made use of the mask.
Discarding the mask is one of the revolutions of Kabuki drama.
However, a vestige [of the mask] was left in the makeup method which would be called "Kumadori"
In any case, Kabuki stage makeup has accomplished an exceeding amount to arrive at its current state.
However, there is an old traditional notion with regards to makeup in Japan.
After all/That is to say, wearing white makeup was not simply to for the sake of appearing beautiful, but, similar to wearing a mask, also showed supernatural power.
As for young boys who put on makeup for festivals, they were attempting to look like figures of god, or perhaps, they were chosen based on the gods' qualifications~?
In the lyrics of [Young Girl's Growth Temple?] there is the phrase "Who [にみしいよ」although red iron encouragement has come to an end, everyone's most important true heart stand" and, the spirit of makeup is supported for the sake of that 'true heart stand'.
In the Feudal Era, makeup had the meaning of showing utmost respect for one's elders.
Samurai, Daimyo, the Imperial Court, etc. the thick heavy makeup called Atsugeshou was held in especially high esteem.
This was based on the idea that showing simplicity to the husband or wife was rude.
Rather, the Atsugeshou was generally used by prostitutes; instead of using Benioshiroi(red & white makeup), Geisha were confined to using Usugeshou (light makeup)
Although these general makeup notions do not necessarily carry over onto the stage, these social intuitions supposedly operate.
Onnagatta had a particularly special hardship: one of the fascinating things of the unique visage is Metsuri (eye angling)(?).
Because of the operation of pulling up the eyes, which was performed before putting on Katsura (wig) to achieve the young brow, when the hat was put on henceforth, a peculiar characteristic of visage is created.
Again, this is an extreme example, however in the realm of drastic measures, makeup for the eyeballs and tongue also existed.
To reveal a sense of the original impression [碇知感] of [1000 Sakura], which was the presentation of being bloodshot, the eyes were pierced to make them red.
Actors who perform this kind of thing have disappeared, but the practice of sacrificing the body [for the sake of art?], in ancient times, was not begrudged.
Growth is good, however, because they used poisonous Oshiroi (white makeup), there were many people who died from lead poisoning. So, the perception is there was the use of [故中村歌右衛門 Protection Branch of the Aforementioned Song Village Amongst the Deceased ?]
Still, because of plays with the mouth flared open in rage, with the tongue extended, red is emphasized, however, this was understood/expressed.
There are examples of such things as [#3 Extruded tongue], 時平公 of [Wheel Tug], the importance of black in [Door of the Gate seki no tobira] but, lately this kind of peculiar thing is gradually fading into the shadows. However, the removal of grotesque flavour from original kabuki is getting fine cracks in the essence.
Next, we cannot neglect to touch on how costume, wig, etc. together with the situation of the special characteristic of various makeup.
For example, when Priest 鳴神, who caused Princess 絶間 to become depraved, ended up drinking sake and falling asleep, [at this moment, interruption-time waterfall's 注連「?」 severed, to cause the dragon king to walk]. When he realizes this upon waking, blue Kumadori is applied in correspondence with a costume change in order to convey his anger. This is a technique of excellent Kabuki.
The Sedge government of Mt. Tenhai of 「Sedge plain initiation of technique learning pattern] also, for an old scene, as it is now the face becomes red but, by this method the makeup is transformed, however, it is without a doubt.
In Disney's animations and comics, there are examples such as the face of the dog who received the report of a death sentence quickly turned pallid (The Achievement of the Nose) and when when the female weasel is kissed by the male weasel, her face proceeds to turn red starting at the tip of her nose (Bambi), etc. where psychological description is shown with colour; Disney is already too late; Kabuki of several hundred years prior has already been using this technique.
Following is an explanation of why there was no theater of naturalism which left standard realism behind.
In accordance with Kumadori also, it goes without saying that there was also the method based on un-real-ness.
The meaning of Kumadori is as follows: the meaning of shading someone's face is there, but because there are points that resemble Shina-drama's eyelids, there is a theory that calls into question the acceptance of that influence.
Additionally, for period dramas, it can be said that typical style productions coupled with development, as well as, with regard to Edo stage's preference for romantic style, there was especially development.
It can be said that Ichikawa Danjuurou founded Sarukuma (monkey Kuma) ???. In addition it advanced to a variety of Kuma(dori?) such as Ippon Kuma (one version/inexperienced geisha?), Sakimi Kuma (sliced meat/fish kuma), Fiery kuma, Lawn [?] Kuma, Indigo Kuma, etc.
From the colour system of these Kuma(dori) it was possible to classify them into 3 general groups. However, because family line is expression of such things as justice, Superhuman strength and blue is the expression of fear, terror, dread, negativity, etc. In addition, the expression of animals such as Fudou Kuma (nonmoving kumdaori), Lion's Mouth (shishikou/shishiguchi?) or Spider, etc.
If we consider it from the point of efficacy, it becomes clear when you compare the stylized symbol with the makeup of German Expressionism or the makeup techniques of modern ballet.
Danjuro IVI used his fingertip to draw on the surface [of his skin?] in preparation for blood vessels to be swollen; That kind of powerful thing, in the context of today's electric illumination it was impossible for designs to not become all the more elaborate; ancient times, the basis of verification of presentation, roughness, as well as the glamour of being moved by vivid performance, are hallmarks of present day Kabuki.
